Female Entrepreneur:
Explores Therapeutic Benefits of
Flotation

Since creation water has had a symbiotic relationship with man.  Not only is water vital to our
daily sustenance, but our physical bodies themselves are comprised of up to 90 % water.  In
addition, water is also documented to have both a calming and a therapeutic effect on many
patients.

So there’s no surprise that someone has taken the initiative to create a center dedicated to the
dynamics of water, specifically to the therapeutic benefits of floating in water in an enclosed,
light deprived and sound proof environment.  Meet Allison Walton.  Allison has just opened
The Float Center, the San Francisco Bay Area’s only Flotation Center and Art Gallery.
For those unfamiliar with the concept of floating or with flotation tanks, here’s the set up.
Imagine a metal pod approximately 8.5' long by 4' wide.  The pod is sound proof and
lightproof and is filled with water that is saturated with 900-100 lbs of medical grade Epson
salt. The result??

You’re able to float effortlessly like a cork on about 10.5 inches of water.  In other words,
you have a Dead Sea effect but without any sun or sound.  Both the air and water is also kept
at a toasty 93.5 degree temperature.

Allison explains that “I originally heard about floatation tanks when I was 16 while hanging
out in Palo Alto, CA.  A friend of a friend had a flotation tank, but was unwilling to let people
float due to the high cost of the salts. This stayed in my mind as something I wanted to try.
Then when I saw the movie Altered States in the 80's, it reminded me again of wanting to try
floatation.

About 15 years ago I discovered a 2-tank floatation center in San Francisco, and began to go
occasionally to help manage my stress level, along with other fun things like skydiving.  Also,
working in management floating was always the best for stress reduction and relaxation,
since the effects can last up to a week.”

Artist, Peter Lippman amen’s the effects of floatation saying that it’s akin to having an “out
of body experience. The body becomes so relaxed that you literally start not to feel your
body.  I began to visualize my body in many different positions.”

By the time Peter had reached to open the door to exit the tank, for a few seconds he could
not distinguish if he was right-side up or not; the relaxation effects were just that great.

Allison explains that “Flotation triggers a relaxation response, much deeper than normal sleep
and enables us to drift into the elusive Theta waves. Floating subtly changes our body
chemistry having a profound beneficial impact on an individual's emotional balance negative
emotions such as anxiety and fear are replaced by positive feelings of empowerment,
confidence, and well-being. “

During the Floatation Center’s grand opening, Shaun Saunders, an advertising executive
shared his mother’s testimony.  His mother has lupus, an autoimmune disease and also had
just gone through a round chemotherapy.

He explains that as a result of her lupus that she experiences “joint problems and arthritis…
so she’s always in pain.  And she just went through a round of chemotherapy so she’s on
different medication.”  He adds that “she’s a bit claustrophobic [but] she got in the tank and
started floating about 15 min.”
It was then that she felt comfortable enough to allow the door to be closed completely.  “It
was the most amazing thing!  She drifted off and she said she didn’t know where she was.
By the time she got out she was buoyant and bouncy and she felt a thousand times better. And
this is a woman who had just gone through chemotherapy two days earlier and could barely
get out of the bed” Shaun happily testified.

An enthusiastic Allison also chimed in adding that flotation “has been used over the years for
pain management.  It increases the endorphin levels in the body for relaxation and stress
management, higher learning, increased creativity, meditation.

Since you’re in theta waves you are very susceptible, so it is also used to help control
addictive behavior, such as smoking or assisting with weight loss.  In addition, since you are
floating in Epson salts they cleanse the body of toxins, lower the blood pressure, and is just
great for the skin. Football players have used floatation since the 80's to improve athletic
performance, and for speed healing from overworked muscles and to recover faster from
injury” she touts.

Enjoying the benefits of Floatation is one thing, but actually opening a business dedicated to it
is totally another.  One thing that motivated Allison to open the Oakland based center is
because, “the popularity of floating has gone up and down in the US, and had often been
restricted to some ones 2nd bedroom, so you would need to know someone to float. I feel it's
time to come out of the closet so to speak, and enter the mainstream. It would be nice to have
floatation in all major cities. And of course floating is just really amazing.”

The Float Center is also adorned with eclectic art which entertains the mind with vivid colors,
shapes and styles.  All of this is intentional of course as the art is meant to create an overall
ambience of peace and tranquility before and after each floatation session.

”We have chosen an eclectic mix of art, and artists, to showcase the facility. Each artist is
extremely diverse and was selected to challenge the heightened senses of our clients upon
exiting the Float tank. In addition, much of their work is extremely beautiful, and offers just a
taste of what is ahead when the individual artists have their own private show at FLOAT”
Allison adds.
Further, the breathtaking art work is also available for purchase.  To learn more about the

Beneficial effects of
Floatation Tank Therapy
The pleasures and benefits of Floatation therapy are based on a
revolutionary scientific approach to deep relaxation called
Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique or R.E.S.T.
for short.

The idea was developed in 1954 at NIMH (the National Institute
of Mental Health) in Washington. Flotation triggers a relaxation
response, much deeper than normal sleep and enables us to
drift into the elusive Theta waves.

The Brain wave explanation by Michael Hutchison, best
describes what happens to us when we are in the 4 stages of
brain wave frequency. Floating subtly changes our body
chemistry having a profound beneficial impact on an
individual's emotional balance negative emotions such as
anxiety and fear are replaced by positive feelings of
empowerment, confidence, and well-being.

Below are the founders in the development and study of
floatation tank therapy:

In 1954 neuro-scientist John Lilly, MD invented the first
Sensory Deprivation tank that is now what we know as the
floatation tank, to access a range of higher brain functions,
meditation & healing.
