For an entire generation the name Bobby Blake became synonymous within the
world of pornography. Having starred in over 100 gay, bisexual and multi-racial
porno flicks Blake quickly became an international sensation fulfilling the erotic
needs and dreams of both gay and straight audiences alike.
Now retired the bisexual porn star reveals that underneath his rock hard muscles,
insatiable sexualized persona and celebrated sexual physical endowment exist an
extremely conservative preacher from Tennessee who ironically is vehemently
against gay marriage and is considering a new career in criminal justice. So just
how does Bobby Blake reconcile his Christ-centered theology, sexual orientation,
and pornographic exploits?
It All Began In Memphis
Bobby’s life started out quite dramatically at birth when he was given two blood
transfusions and doctors informed his parents that he probably would not live.
But even as an infant he fought his way back into existence where he was later
raised in a conservative Christian household.
Growing up he recalls that church was a constant in his life as his family attended
multiple times throughout the week. “My parents didn’t just drop us off at the
church they carried us to church.”
But it was around the age of 14 or 15 that Blake’s sexual curiosity began to
awaken as he remembers entering an adult bookstore where he first viewed adult
movies. He thought to himself back then “I want to try this one day.”
The Story Continues in Los Angeles
Eventually Bobby left the great state of Tennessee headed for Los Angeles to
expand his horizons. He soon found himself working as an erotic dancer which
led to his first big break. Although his moves and physique always caught the
attention of many, one night while dancing at the Catch One, a friend of his
noticed he seemed bored.
Blake recalls that his friend told him he knew of place where “There were fine
men and hot sex going on.” Within minutes they soon found themselves attending
a sex club that was being run by a black gay porn star from the mid 80’s Paul
Hanson.
“I had the time of my life…I was having a fiesta. It was amazing and shocking to
Paul how I was manhandling them [men] making them groan and holler. He was
impressed by my uninhibited performance with the other patrons and
recommended me to some adult film producers who invited me to appear in a
film they were casting, Ebony Knights.
I thought why not? I tried it, I enjoyed it. I made a big impression. So from pretty
much day one I was in demand and constantly working.”
And work is exactly what he did having starred in over 100 films as the
physically, sexually, and verbally dominant and aggressive manly force. And
during those heyday years, Blake learned every aspect of the porno business
enduring racism while collecting multi-racial fans from across the world.
Reconciling Faith, Sexuality and Porn
When asked if he has had any trouble reconciling his faith, sexuality and porn,
Blake gives a longwinded but eloquent response:
“My relationship with God is personal. And when you’re in a personal
relationship you don’t allow what other people think and what other people say
interfere in your relationship. My favorite individual in the bible is David.
In all of his sin and all of his doing you don’t see where he allowed third party
philosophy concept to interfere with his relationship with God. So with my
relationship being personal with my creator what people felt about me, it did not
bother me.
I’ve always felt that way. I grew up that way. I understood that the most important
element in my life, most important relationship would not be with my pastor, the
members of the church, my mom, my dad…….But my most important
relationship would be with my creator. When it is all said and done it will be
God who will make the final decision [who will] judge me according to my heart.”
Blake also credits his masculinity as reasons why he is accepted in his church
and as a minister.
“When you carry yourself in a way that people have to respect you they don’t do
that. I’ve done porn I’ve been retired for 7 years. The people in the church know
that but they respect me because of the way I carry myself.
When you know that what you know and you preach and teach that which is real
there cannot be any doubt in the minds of the people but when you do not know
what you’re talking about.
When you do not educate yourself then there can be doubts in the minds of the
people. I carry myself like as a man first of all and in doing so respect comes
with that. I don’t believe in twisting and turning.”
The Uglier Side of Porn
Today Bobby Blake has a much different view about the industry that propelled
him to stardom and financial success. He sees an environment so corrupt with
drugs and unscrupulous business deals that he actively encourages young people
not to enter into the porn industry and instead get an education and to learn a
trade.
“…Porn today I don’t think it’s a good thing. There are companies who use young
men as though they are animals. I have always dealt with companies from a
business level. I never smile in their faces never cared if they liked me or not. I
expected and demanded things from companies and models who were in my
circle. I was hated by a lot of models and companies did I care? No ..not at all. I
have a in your face mindset”
His warning to young people seeking to jump head-first into the shark filled
waters of porn:
“Its not promise that you will be a Bobby Blake. I have never had problems but I
know companies who have shot movies and never paid the models but made
money off the movie. That would have never happen to me. I have worked for
every major company that existed not to say we agreed on every thing, they just
put up with me because they needed to make some money.
The people gave me the power by purchasing my movies therefore making me a
big demand. I called the shots of who I was working with or not. I have sent
models home; my ex-lover Flex and I were not the best of friends on set. I was
about business and all in my presence understood that, my lover, associates,
friends, producers and owners. I am not in a contest to be loved by all.” Blake
credits producer, Edward James for mentoring him and making him into a savvy
businessman behind the sweat, groans and gyrations of his onscreen persona.
Another specter of the world of pornography is rampant drug use. In fact the porn
industry is an arena notoriously filled with various addictions and with little to no
coordinated intervention or counseling. Unlike conventional jobs where drug
testing is the norm rather than the exception, within the world of pornography
people care very little about another’s drug use, just as long as it does not
interfere with their on-the-set performance.
“…There are so many drugs it makes a hospital look like a candy store. You
have a lot of house companies; people who go to the bus stop and pick up guys ...
clean them up give them $50.00 to shoot the movie and sell the movie on the net.
Because you did a porn movie does not make you a porn star you are a porn
actor.”
Bobby Blake’s Anti-Gay Marriage Beliefs
One of the hardest fought battles of recent history in the gay movement has been
securing the legal right to marry. Marriage is a fundamental right enjoyed by
heterosexuals providing them with legal protections for their loved one’s and
families.
But Bobby Blake doesn’t buy the concept of gay marriage. In fact he doesn’t see
much validity in it and prefers to see alternative methods of securing rights for
gays such as signing legal documents such as wills.
“I see no need for two men or two women to stand before god and say to god I
want to be married to this person. People who have been together 3 and 4 years
relationship don’t last. People exchange rings. The ring says I love you but a lot
of times that ring is a symbol. What matters to me is what’s in the heart…
We have to do is fall in love with each other and not lust after each other. There’s
a difference and when you love that’s what’s matter. When sex gets weak you
got love. When you get sick you’ve got love.”
However, it is extremely important to understand that legalized marriage
immediately makes a gay couple next-to-kin which is crucial because it provides
over 1,000 federal benefits that many legal documents can not provide or may not
hold up to if contested in a court of law by the deceased partner’s family
members.
The Future of Bobby Blake
He has a new tell-all book coming out in May 2008, The Bobby Blake Story
/Avalon Publishing. In this book we’re promised and in depth look into the life of
Bobby from his difficult birth, his life mistakes, journey through pornography
accounts of racism in the industry, and his present day thoughts on life.
It promises to be a must-read book of truth, understanding and evolution of how
an individual negotiates his way between the worlds of Jesus, porn and anti-gay
marriage sentiments that is now Bobby Blake.
In addition Bobby raps on a single by “Booty Ain’t Got No Face” with rapper
Trudog out now for purchase.
Bobby Blake’s Desired Legacy
Having been retired for 7 years, Bobby Blake still receives residuals from his
movies and proudly claims that he will continue to do so until the day he dies.
But beyond money and having his films live on the internet and on DVDs forever,
Bobby seemingly looks beyond fame as his lasting legacy and contribution to the
world.
“ I give back to the community money, time and service. I try and educate people
about the need to have safe sex...don't allow people to use you as a sex toy,
stand for something. I travel the world meeting fans as far as Africa, people from
all walks of life. I try and push education since being retired I have gone back to
college to get a degree in criminal justice.
I try and tell the young people that the world you live in is not a gay world so get
with it or be left out. You don't have to walk around twisting and turning. It’s no
one’s business if you gay or not, be a man in the street and you will be treated as
one. I did gay and bi movies but in the streets I am a man at heart therefore
people treat me as a man .I have more ladies coming on to me than ever before.
You have these drag queens walking around in the day light looking like bricks.
In my young day they did shows and took that extra off.. It was only a job. In the
streets they carried themselves as men.”
And then come into play the deeply religious part of Bobby Blake. Beyond his
community service and mantra of safe sex he reveals that above all that he is a
spiritual being and would like to be remembered as such:
“I want to be known as a person who loved God first and all others after. I am a
man born of a woman who have made mistakes but overcame those mistakes and
learned from them. I opened up my life that others might take a deep look at self
and in doing so I hope they come face to face with reality; you must have a
personal relationship with God. I ask myself questions why did I take this route
and God told me why.
I have counseled so many men and women who want to die and not livee because
of what others said. The Church said you were nothing not fit to live and not
ready to die, you were going to hell. So when the sun has set in my life let the
record shows that I have tried to help someone and that my living was not in vain"
